While a reformulated and theoretically less dangerous version of Hydroxycut is already on the shelves, the questions about its ability to actually affect weight loss linger. Most of the ingredients of the supplement are traditional nutrients, making it what is commonly called a nutraceutical: a drug-like product containing nutritional ingredients which are purported to have a positive effect on health. However, the health benefits of Hydroxycut, like virtually all nutraceuticals, is not well-supported by research.
Recent studies have suggested that many of the positive benefits attributed to such supplements are due largely to the placebo effect, in which people taking pills expect to see benefits from them, and as a result believe they do.
